Merry Christmas / Gleðileg Jól

There has been very little snowfall in Iceland so far this winter, so Kaspars and I have escaped to the north for a much-deserved end of year getaway in search of some wintery scenes. We spent Christmas eve driving to Ólafsfjörður, where we are staying in a cosy little Airbnb. This has quickly become one of my favourite towns in Iceland for all of its Christmas-lit charm!

Christmas day was spent scouting for locations where we could photograph the Northern Lights. I chose Héðinsfjörður for the beautiful mountains on either side of the fjord. To the west stands Hestfjall (536m) and to the east is Hvanndalabyrda (624m). Kaspars found the loveheart in the ice in the dark!

Luckily for us, the Aurora Borealis made a display rather early on, with cloud cover expanding across the sky by midnight. The waning gibbous moon provided enough light to illuminate the mountains and the foreground.

Happy holidays and we hope you’ll have a safe and wonderful break before the New Year!

Location: Héðinsfjörður, North Iceland.
