Over the last year, record-breaking heat has affected countries all over the world. It has resulted in unprecedented melting throughout Greenland and fuelled wildfires across Australia.
When we visited the Austrian Alps, the sentiment amongst locals was that the winters they knew from childhood were long gone, replaced instead by warmer temperatures and a glaring lack of snow. In this image, you can see ice fog clinging to the trees. This was a common phenomenon which would often melt as the temperature reached its peak during the day. Although we spent our entire time high in the mountains, we experienced temperatures ranging from -14°C to +14°C, all within the space of a few days.
The extreme climate events that we’ve been experiencing will only continue. We need to keep talking about the reality of climate change and how we can make efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, as well as strategies for adapting to a warmer world. The more that we make the climate crisis a part of our normal conversation, the easier it will be to keep at the forefront of everyone’s minds. This is one of the ways that we can motivate key decision-makers to commit to a change.
